Let us debate
this a little. Yes, the bible says we should spare the rod and spoil the child
but the way some people are not sparing the rod at all is alarming.
I just read
about a JSS1 girl that was flogged to death by her teacher in Awka.
The teacher was said to have flogged her till she fainted and subsequently died when rushed to the hospital for not doing her homework.
Reports have it that the Anambra Commissioner for Education, Mrs Uju Okeke immediately ordered the closure of the school as a result of the incident but when contacted, she denied ordering the closure of the school insisting the school was on midterm break.
NAN investigated and gathered that schools in Anambra were not on midterm break. So the woman was lying ni?
You see, some
students give teachers cause for annoyance but the teachers ought to be careful
in the way they treat such issues.
Talk about
ordering closure of the school…
Why the
hankey-pankey in the entire thing? They better investigate this issue o!
I do not know
what happened or how much flogging the girl got but every child is not the
same. While some children are die-hard and can take any stroke of cane whilst
repeating what they have been punished for, some cannot. So to be on the safe
side, isn’t it then wise for proprietors and teachers to come up with
alternative punishments for such kids?
I have
watched some foreign movies where erring students are made to stay for
detention. They stay back after their mates have gone home to learn. Since most
students don’t like extra hours at school, that can serve as a good enough
punishment for the child. Even telling that girl to stay back during break time
to finish the homework is punishment. If that happens twice, she may not repeat
the act again.
See eh, I understand
the frustration when you teach children. I had my share of that when I taught during my
youth service. Sometimes they can be very head-strong and disobedient; but that
is exactly why you are the adult in their midst. You teach them the ropes.
The parents
of this 12 year old girl may not press charges but this should serve as a
warning to other teachers. You don’t know where you will touch someone and they
slump and die.
Yes, some
parents in frustration even tell teachers to flog their stubborn children if
they misbehave but it’s that same parent that will drag the teacher’s pant till
she wishes she hadn’t ever handled a cane.
I remember
back in the days when we were in Primary and Secondary schools…
Students then
would wear double panties, bum shorts and double dresses so that they wouldn’t
feel the sting of the cane. Some even used to feign fainting then and you would
see perspiration break out on the teacher’s face as he/she struggles to bring
the student to. If that fear is there, isn’t it then better to play safe?
There are
creative ways to punish children for wrongdoings especially in school; the
teachers need to get creative to avoid bringing gbese on top of their own
heads.
