Do Nigerian men choose wives based on employment status?

Our young men of these days in Naija are not smiling  when it comes to selecting a wife o!

You know, back in the days the last thing a man worried about when selecting a wife was what job she was doing; but these days, the reverse is the case.

I was chatting with a male colleague the other day and he spoke of being ready for marriage. When I asked if he had found the woman he intended to marry, he said he hadn't and would love to meet any friend of mine that was single. When I told him about one, the next question he asked was, ‘ where does she work?’

I was surprised but he told me to wipe the surprise from my face. He said no man wanted a burden for a wife. So wife wey no get work don turn burden abi?

Another guy I know married a woman he can’t say he loves but at least she had strong business acumen.

Somehow, it appears like some men (especially the educated, working class ones) are going for ambition in a woman believing that ‘like’ is enough so long as the money is present.

I may be wrong but I have noticed it. Abeg, what is going on? Have you noticed it too?

If you have, what do you think is bringing about this trend?
